Unfinished material often looks ordinary because the trunk is hidden, the container is distracting and every branch competes for attention. Potential becomes clearer when you separate permanent structure from temporary growth and ask which problems can be solved without inventing a different tree.

Start with base and trunk
Look for a stable root transition, a trunk line that remains readable and taper that improves toward a possible apex. Rotate the tree in person because a photograph can hide the best front or a serious structural fault.
A thick trunk is not automatically good material. Reverse taper, repeated swelling, abrupt cylindrical sections and a base that exits the soil without stability can dominate every future design.
Inventory branch options
Mark branches that can create depth, possible leaders, sacrifice growth and congested junctions. Keep options separate from commitments; a branch can be useful even if it does not appear in the first imagined silhouette.
Dense foliage may indicate vigor but does not guarantee useful placement. A sparse tree can still have strong potential when a few branches occur at structurally valuable points.
Distinguish designable problems from hard limits
Some imbalance can be refined through future growth, branch selection and staged development. Hidden root faults, severe inverse taper, unhealthy live tissue and branches that cannot safely move require direct assessment.
A visual concept should never erase a hard limit. If every result depends on replacing the base, correcting a major trunk section or adding impossible branches, the material may not support that direction.
Use visualization as a go/no-go discussion
Photograph the clearest front, choose one plausible supported style and compare four concepts. Then test a second direction only if the real trunk provides evidence for it.
